What I really love about Kershaw knives is their commitment to make great knives that look great too. Where so many companies are content with inside the box designs, Kershaw always seems to be pushing the boundaries of both function and aesthetic. They truly do offer products that provide "technology with an edge."
This Kershaw Black Vapor's 3-inch blade is available with a partially serrated edge or a plain edge, made of Ti-Nitride coated AUS6A stainless steel. For extra strength and wear resistance, the blade has been flat ground to a "shaving sharp" edge. The handle is the real innovation here. Made from heat-treated, high strength 410 stainless steel, it has a "drilled" industrial design which enhances the knife's airy look and feel.
What the Black Vapor lacks, however, is Kershaw's Speed-Safe assisted-opening system. The Black Vapor is opened by a thumb stud and rotates smoothly into an open position. A frame lock holds it in place. This works nicely, and allows a one-handed opening, but the Speed-Safe technology makes opening the blade really quick and easy. Check out the design collaboration from Frank Centofante and Ken Onion to see a good example, but most of Kershaw's locking knives have this Speed-Safe technology built in.
The Black Vapor has an overall length of 7-inches, and an overall weight of 3.25.
